Technology Transfer is the process of identifying both research that has potential commercial interest, and strategies for how to convert the research to practical products. Caltech's Office of Technology Transfer (OTT) oversees patenting and licensing on behalf of campus and JPL. JPL's Technology Transfer and Commercialization Office receives disclosures of inventions, assists OTT in patenting decisions and provides licenses to bona fide US Government users. The Institute's policy is to patent inventions developed at the Institute, and license these patents to companies that will invest the funds necessary to develop products for the greatest possible public benefit. The Research Affairs Group of the Office of the General Counsel provides support in many areas of technology transfer, including assistance with patent issues, copyright, contracts, and corporate law, as well as litigation to enforce and protect copyright and patent rights.
